Anticipation
I’m excited to begin my internship with the Durango Telegraph! The process of finding an internship has been sort of stressful, but my mentor, Missy Votel, has been encouraging and flexible the whole time. I'm hoping to organize a portfolio of my work that I do at the Telegraph and present it at exhibition for my final project.
Reflection
I have always had a great interest in writing, but had never thought of it has a career path until the start of junior year and LINK. After struggling to find an internship for the majority of the allotted time, I found an internship here at home, with the Durango Telegraph. Starting out, my mentor, Missy Votel, had told me she would have me write a news story for the paper on Fort Lewis College setting out to be environmentally neutral by 2080. Since I was unsure what type of writing I wanted to pursue, I was excited to jump on it. After getting several interviews and quotes, I wrote a story, but not without struggle. I didn't know the best way to write a story without inserting my opinion, or my voice, into it. I realized from this internship that news writing wasn't the kind of writing that I wanted to do. I gained a lot of insight of what I do and don't like in the real world. For instance, I realized that, if I were to work for a newspaper or magazine, I would like to do writing that I can voice my opinion in, but is also current and relevant to society. I also learned that I really like being held accountable, and having real deadlines that matter to something other than just my grade.
